PROVOCATION 1

Welcome to the RealSpace in QuickTimes WebSite.
You haven't visited the Dutch pavillion in the Triennale of Milan on design and architecture? You want to have a second look? Or would you like to re-experience the S-curve in the wooden shell? Take your chance now. Hand on the mouse. Your promenade architecturale is a matter of click click, through cyberspace.

This site contains text about, and (moving) images from the exhibition of the same name, also elucidated in a book with that title, published by NAi Publishers, Rotterdam.
Although pictures and text are stored in Read Lonely Memory, their content is about collective free will. Recent developments in Computer Aided Design, Smart-tech and Virtual Reality are covered, viewed both from a market-driven and user-driven perspective. Digitization is not just an inexorable force that shackles creativity and innovation to what is marketable. Private endeavor and public work are at stake. RealSpace in QuickTimes is a plea for the survival of ideas in cyberspace, driven by unbeatable voluntarism.

What's the subject?
Cyberspace undeniably has immense cultural and architectural consequences and is destined to have even greater ones. The digital paradigm implies: In the process it will indubitably alter our environment. Offices, shopping centres, dockyards, schools, hospitals, prisons, cultural institutions, even the private domain of the home: all the familiar design types will be up for review.
So it is not just architecture's character that has been changed by the computer, but also its mandate.

RealSpace in QuickTimes not only tries to deal with these questions, but also takes on a critical stance vis-a-vis the cultural conditions that lay at their roots.
